Mother, father, child drown at Erbil resort

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Three members of a family, including a child, drowned at Gali Ali Beg, an Erbil mountain resort, on Saturday. Only one body has been recovered and a diving team is looking for the other two.

"The child, a 3-year-old girl, was playing in the water and fell into the river. Then the father tried to rescue his girl, but he drowned too," the director of Soran's Civil Defense, Bayar Muhiddin, told Rudaw's Bahroz Faraidun.

The mother dived into the river to try and rescue her family, but she also drowned, he added.

Gali Ali Beg waterfall on the Rawanduz River is a popular picnic spot, attracting tourists from across Iraq during holidays and the hot summer months. The family, whose identities have not been released, is originally from Shingal, but had been living in Erbil’s Baharka town.

The body of the woman was found about 100 metres downstream and a Civil Defense diving team is searching for the bodies of the father and child.
