8 dead, 10 injured as Raniya family feud escalates
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – At least eight people including two members of the security forces have been killed and more than 10 wounded in fights between two families in the city of Raniya in Sulaimani, local officials confirmed.
Shorish Ismael, a spokesperson for Raparin Police, told Rudaw “after the killing of someone at Hajiyawa bazaar, the problem escalated to the village of Klawsoran in Chwarqurna township in Raniya between the family of the murdered and the murderer, resulting in the death of two more.”
Taha Mohammed, head of the Raparin Health Department, said the fight resumed on Saturday night.
“Due to the escalating social problem, clashes happened many times,” he said, putting the death toll at eight.
Of the eight dead, six are men, one is a woman and one a child, he added.
A source told Rudaw that among the dead is a family, including father, mother, child and grandfather.
“More than 10 people have also been wounded,” said Ismael, adding the fight has not been brought under control by security forces.
Rudaw’s Rawchi Hassan, reporting from the scene, said counterterrorism and security forces have been dispatched.
Raniya district of Sulaimani province is about 79 kilometers east of Erbil city.
