KRG launches online education for students under lockdown
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s education ministry began on Saturday providing online education to students more than two month after schools were closed due to the novel coronavirus lockdown. The health ministry on Saturday recorded six new cases of the virus bringing the region-wide tally to 387.
Schools and universities were closed on February 26 as part of the KRG’s measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. The education ministry had previously announced that they would begin online education in mid-April and open schools on May 2 “if the virus is controlled.” The number of cases continues to rise and schools and universities have remained closed despite easing of restrictions of movement under the lockdown.
The online tutorials are not mandatory. They are available on the internet and via the education ministry’s local television channel which is expected to be aired on Nilesat late this afternoon. Telephone and internet service providers are offering free internet for students to access the tutorials.
Kurdistan Region is home to 6,429 schools with 1,707,249 students enrolled this year.
Universities and some private schools have already begun online education.
The lockdown has been extended to May 10, just a few weeks before the end of classes.
