ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kuwait said Tuesday that four members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were arrested in early May after allegedly attempting to infiltrate Kuwaiti territory, leaving one Kuwaiti security personnel injured.
Kuwait’s foreign ministry expressed “strong condemnation” of “an armed group from elements” of the IRGC “infiltrating Bubiyan Island with the aim of carrying out hostile acts against the State of Kuwait, and their engagement with Kuwaiti Armed Forces personnel before being apprehended.”
It added that a member of the Kuwaiti armed forces was injured in the confrontation.
The four men said they had been tasked by Iran's IRGC with “infiltrating” Bubiyan Island, Kuwait's interior ministry said in a statement published by state news agency KUNA.
Bubiyan is Kuwait’s largest island and is located near the Iranian coast.
According to the interior ministry, the group attempted to enter the island on May 1 “aboard a fishing boat specially chartered to carry out hostile actions against Kuwait.”
Kuwait’s foreign ministry said Tehran “bears full responsibility for these hostile acts, and that the State of Kuwait reserves its full and inherent right to self-defense.”
The ministry also called on Tehran to “immediately and unconditionally cease its unlawful hostile acts that threaten the security and stability of the region and undermine regional and international efforts aimed at de-escalation.”
