In Yemen, civil war can't chew into khat trade

SANAA, Yemen - The consumption and cultivation of khat, a plant chewed from its stimulating effect, is an ancient tradition in Yemeni culture and is widely used at various social occasions and events.
 
According to khat consumers, chewing the plant makes them feel euphoric and energized. It also increases their ability to focus and carry out their daily work. These characteristics have made the plant popular and consumed extensively.
 
Although it is grown locally, the amount on the market has been reduced as a result of the current blockade on Yemen and a fuel shortage. These factors have increased the near-constant demand.
 
Despite documented health risks associated with khat, international organizations do not consider it an addictive substance.
 
The civil war between the Houthi rebels and forces loyal to the government has now been going on for more than 100 days. Even so, the consumption of khat has not changed. It is an integral part of Yemeni culture.
