ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) leader Mazloum Abdi met in Munich on Sunday, discussing the latest developments in Syria.
The northeast Syria (Rojava) delegation, which included Ilham Ahmed, head of Rojava's foreign affairs office, met with Barzani on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference.
This is the first time Abdi attends an international event.
"President Nechirvan Barzani stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and mutual understanding to reach political solutions to Syria’s issues, in a way that protects the rights of the Kurds and all components within a unified Syria and in the country’s future constitution," read a statement from Kurdistan Region Presidency.
Abdi thanked Kurdistan Region's leadership "for their continued efforts and influential role in helping stabilize the situation and facilitating the ceasefire agreement between Damascus and the SDF," added the statement.
They also talked about the "risks" of Islamic State (ISIS) "resurgence."
Following the meeting, Abdi told reporters the meeting was good.
Regarding the establishment of a self-rule for Kurds in Syria, Abdi told Rudaw that they want a Kurdish entity.
"The Syrian government has an issue with titles and terms. We want a local Kurdish government, disregarding the name, as long as Kurds govern their areas," he said.
He said during his meetings with foreign leaders in Munich, they emphasised that Kurds should gain their rights in Syria and “Kurds must be allowed to govern their areas.”
