Iraq’s Sudani meets Jordan’s king in Amman
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Tuesday met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II on the sidelines of the second edition of the Baghdad Conference in the Jordanian capital, discussing bilateral cooperation as well as Iraq’s regional importance.
Sudani arrived in Jordan’s capital of Amman on Tuesday to participate in the second Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership, expected to be attended by regional foreign ministers as well as French President Emmanuel Macron.
The summit aims to “provide support for the stability, security, and prosperity of Iraq,” AP cited the French presidency as saying, after the first edition of the conference was held last year in Baghdad.
“The meeting focused on discussing aspects of cooperation between the two countries and ways to enhance bilateral relations in the economic and trade sectors to serve the interests of the two brotherly countries,” a statement from Sudani’s office read.
The meeting also highlighted “Iraq’s pivotal role in the region,” the statement added.
Iraq and Jordan have shared stronger relations over the past few years.
Iraq and Jordan signed an agreement in February 2019 through which Iraq would lift tariffs on Jordanian products, while Jordan would buy 10,000 barrels of oil per day from Iraq.
