ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq has offered Iran its assistance after a massive explosion left more than 700 people injured and six dead on Saturday.
“The Republic of Iraq extends its condolences to the government and people of Iran, affirming its support and standing by them during these painful moments,” the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“Iraq reaffirms the necessity of strengthening regional and international cooperation to confront urgent challenges and emphasizes its readiness to provide any possible support that may help alleviate the effects of this tragedy,” the statement added.
The president of the Kurdistan Region also expressed his condolences.
“We extend our deep condolences to the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the families of the victims of today's explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas city,” President Nechirvan Barzani said in a statement.
Barzani offered prayers for the victims and wished a swift recovery for the injured.
At least six people were killed and more than 700 injured in the large blast at Shahid Rajaee port in Iran’s southern coastal city of Bandar Abbas.
The cause of the explosion remains unclear, though reports indicate chemicals stored at the site may have been a factor.
Located in Hormozgan province, Shahid Rajaee is Iran’s largest commercial port.
