Hijacked Egyptian airliner forced to land in Cyprus; motives unknown
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – An Egyptian passenger plane, with more than 60 people reported on board, has been hijacked and forced to land at Larnaca airport in Cyprus.
The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation reported there are 55 passengers and sevencrew on board.
Cypriot media reports said the plane, reportedly operated by Egyptair, landed at Larnaca airport at 8:50 a.m., after taking off from the city of Alexandria in Egypt.
The reports quoted Cyprus police as saying the Airbus A320 plane was commandeered by a single armed hijacker 20 minutes before landing.
The demands of the hijacker, or which organization he is from, remain unknown, Cypriot authorities were reported as saying.
