Israel says responded to attack from Syria
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Israeli army said early on Saturday that its air forces struck areas in Syria from where two missiles were fired into Israel. There are no reports of casualties.
“Following the report about sirens in the north of the country, a short time ago two missiles crossing from Syrian territory fell in an open area. IDF forces are attacking the sources of the fire,” said the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) without providing details of locations.
Tel Aviv rarely comments on its attacks on Syria.
Two separate Israeli airstrikes targeted Syria late Thursday night, causing material damage, Syrian state media reported.
Israel has carried out numerous airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its 12-year civil war, claiming to target pro-Iran militias, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah which supports the Syrian army.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said military bases of pro-Iran militia groups were hit in Syria’s eastern province of Deir ez-Zor late Friday night, but it is uncertain who carried them out. In addition to Israel, the United States also periodically targets Iran-backed groups Washington blames for rocket and drone attacks on its forces.
