Injury toll from latest Kermanshah earthquake tops 50

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The number of people injured in Sunday’s earthquake in Iran’s Kurdish city of Kermanshah has risen to 53.

Saeb Mudarisi, the head of the Emergency Incident Control Center in the province, stated that 15 people have been treated and the remaining 38 are receiving care at Sarpol-e Zahab hospital.

Maziar Tahmasebi, the head of the Sarpol-e Zahab health network, confirmed to Iran’s ILNA news agency that the hospital is treating the injured.

The earthquake’s epicenter was just southeast of Sarpol-e Zahab city. The European-based GEOFON seismology network reported the 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 1:05 p.m. local time. Tremors were felt as far as the Tehran, Ilam, Sina and Urmia provinces.

Sarpol-e Zahab was the hardest hit area of the 7.3 magnitude earthquake on the evening of November 12, 2017. It struck the Iraq-Iran border, leaving 620 people dead and another 12,000 injured in Iran.

Since the November 12 earthquake — which was the deadliest in the world in 2017 — 1,600 aftershocks have continued to rock Kermanshah and the surrounding areas.

Ten cities and 1,930 villages were affected across the province and poor quality construction of low-income housing in the Kurdish majority community is being blamed for the high death toll.

A primary school teacher committed suicide in early March after coming into financial difficulties and living in harsh conditions.

Across the border in the Kurdistan Region, 10 people were killed and over 500 injured, with Darbandikhan being the most affected area.

Massive damage to private and public property was also reported in the Kurdistan Region by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) teams in Sulaimani, including Darbandikhan dam along with the Halabja hospital and the Sulaimani hospital.
