Kurdish horses show off skills at Iran festival

SANANDAJ, Iran – The second annual Kurdish horse festival has wrapped up in Iran’s Sanandaj.

The three-day event featured performances of horse and rider skills. Attendees were also treated to traditional dances and games.

There are three breeds of Kurdish horse, asp in Kurdish, known for their strength and hardiness – Jaf, Afshari, and Sanjabi. Stone carvings in Libya dating back to 480 BC are believed to depict a Jaf horse.

Kurdish horses have also mixed with Arabian and Persian breeds over the years to create strong, fast horses.
