Despite lifting of sanctions European banks wary of business with Iran
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran has expressed its frustration over many banks in Europe remaining wary of resuming business ties with Tehran despite the removal of economic sanctions against it last January.
As part of an international nuclear agreement reached with Iran in July 2015, the United States and European Union lifted the bulk of their economic sanctions against Tehran’s clerical government.
However, the US government is still forbidding American banks from doing business with Iran, since Washington still charges Tehran with aiding and abetting terrorists in the Middle East.
"There is still 'Iranophobia' in the banking sector that we're trying to overcome," according to deputy governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Hamid Tehranfar.
"We have asked the International Monetary Fund to review our regulations so other countries' banks feel reassured,” he was quoted as saying by Iran’s official Press TV. “The IMF will announce its assessment in 2018," he said.
