ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - US army on Sunday claimed that Iran has begun launching attacks from densely-populated areas, risking the lives of civilians.
“The Iranian regime is using heavily populated civilian areas to conduct military operations, including launching one-way attack drones and ballistic missiles,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.
“This dangerous decision risks the lives of all civilians in Iran since locations used for military purposes lose protected status and could become legitimate military targets under international law,” it added.
US and Israel launched a joint aerial campaign against Iran on February 28, killing many of the country’s leaders and commanders, including long-time Spiritual Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has also accused Washington and Tel Aviv of targeting civilians, including a strike on a school that reportedly killed dozens of students. US President Donald Trump on Saturday said the attack on the school may have been carried out by Iranian security forces themselves.
“Iran’s terrorist regime is blatantly disregarding civilian lives by attacking Gulf partners while compromising the safety of their own people,” Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, was cited as saying in the statement.
Iran has carried out drone and missile attacks on US bases and interests in Gulf states.
