Iran arrests alleged Israeli spy in Kerman
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday arrested an individual it accused of being a spy for the Israeli intelligence service in the southeastern city of Kerman, media affiliated with the Guards reported, adding that the suspect was intending to threaten the country’s security.
“The accused intended to carry out anti-security and subversive measures in the province, but with the vigilance of the IRGC intelligence organization, this plot was thwarted,” Tasnim News Agency cited Kerman’s justice chief Hojjatul Islam Hamidi as saying.
Hamidi claimed that the Mossad “spy” was trying to leave the country but was arrested before doing so.
“The accused had communited with the military and intelligence organizations and organs of the usurping Zionist regime by using the platform of cyberspace and also through numerous encrypted software,” Hamidi added.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused foreign nations, mainly Israel, the United States, and European countries of being behind the recent wave of massive countrywide protests in the country that have triggered a violent crackdown by security forces.
The protests stemmed from the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa (Zhina) Amini in custody of the country’s so-called morality police in Tehran.
The protests have been particularly violent in the Kurdish areas of western Iran (Rojhelat), with Paris-based Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) saying that at least 30 were killed in the Kurdish areas in four weeks of protests while 825 people were wounded.
Oslo-based Iran Human Rights Organization puts the countrywide death toll higher, saying at least 185 have lost their lives at the hands of Iranian regime forces.
In August, Iran detained multiple foreign diplomats over charges of espionage, including a Polish national who the Islamic republic accused of having ties to Israel.
