Nearly 1,500 Iranian civilians killed since the start of war - watchdog
Erbil, Kurdistan Region - US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) announced that as of Friday morning at least 1,394 civilians have been killed including 210 children as a result of the US-Israel air campaign launched against the Islamic Republic of Iran on February 28.
The US and Israel have carried out close to 10,000 strikes across Iran targeting mostly the military bases of the security forces including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) leaving a large number of military personnel dead or wounded.
Iran has responded by launching barrages of ballistic missiles and one way drones at Israel, the Gulf countries, Iraq and Kurdistan Region and the US military bases in the region.
HRANA, which monitors the human rights situation in Iran through an
extensive network of reporters and citizen journalists, reported that at
least 1,153 military personnel have been killed. The organisation added
that it has not been able to establish whether another 639 individuals
have been military or civilian casualties.
Iran has provided patchy data about the number of casualties. The
ministry of health data quoted by Iranian media showed that more than
18,000 civilians have been wounded. The ministry did not provide the
overall civilian deaths but said that 206 deaths under the age of 18 have been recorded. It also added that 231 women have been killed as of Friday morning.
The spokesperson for Iran Red Crescent Society Pirhossein Kolivand said
that since the beginning of the war 70,000 non-military units including
residential, commercial and educational buildings have been damaged. The
number included 251 medical facilities, 498 schools and 17 Red Crescent
centres.
Tehran has not provided how many military personnel across its security
forces have been killed but daily funerals of the members of the IRGC
and other forces including its feared militia Basij have been held
across Iran.Dozens of civilians have been reported killed in Tehran and other cities
on numerous occasions after high ranking security officials used
residential areas as a refuge. The latest was a Kurdish woman Berivan
Molani who resided in a flat in the affluent neighbourhood of
Zafaraniyeh in northern Tehran and was killed when Israeli aircrafts
targeted Iran’s minister of intelligence Esmail Khatib on Tuesday
morning. A friend reported on Instagram that 50 other civilians were
killed in the bombing unaware that the top intelligence official was
living in their vicinity.
