ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - United States President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that the US had carried out airstrikes targeting Iran’s three primary nuclear sites, hailing the operation as a “historic moment” and urging Tehran to “agree to end this war.”
“We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
He described the strikes as a ”historic moment for the United States of America, Israel, and the world.”
“Iran must now agree to end this war. Thank you,” Trump stressed.
The strikes were a culmination of days of speculation on whether Washington would join Israel’s attacks against Iran, particularly after Trump cut his trip to Canada for a G7 meeting short and returned to the US to convene a National Security Council meeting on Tuesday.
On Friday, Trump said it is “very hard” for Washington to call on Israel to halt its attacks on Iran.
Iranian state media confirmed the attack on the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, which houses Iran’s most advanced centrifuges and is heavily fortified, located deep within a mountain near the city of Qom.
Trump also said he was giving Iran two weeks before he would make a decision about getting directly involved in the conflict. “I'm giving them a period of time, I would say two weeks will be the maximum.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that Tehran is ready to continue nuclear negotiations once the conflict with Israel is over.
