Iraqi and Shiite forces poised for operation to open Ramadi corridor

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – An Iraqi officer said on Sunday that joint army and Shiite forces were geared up for an operation to open a corridor to Ramadi, where a war is underway against the Islamic State group (ISIS).

“The joint security and Hashd al-Shaabi forces resumed military assaults against the Islamic State elements in the town of Humaira on Sunday,” an Iraqi army intelligence officer told Rudaw on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

“With the recapture of the area of Humaira, we will easily recapture areas on the eastern side of Ramadi,” he said.

The same source on Saturday told Rudaw: “Iraqi forces have been able to reclaim the area of Moshahida and Iraqi forces are advancing into Humaira.”

In mid-July, the Iraqi defense ministry announced the resumption of an offensive against ISIS in Anbar province with a joint army, police and Shiite force of 10,000.
