Christian bloc condemns attacks on Kurdistan Region, urges Baghdad to protect sovereignty

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Christian Alliance on Tuesday condemned the recent bombardments targeting civilian areas and Peshmerga forces in the Kurdistan Region, warning that continued escalation threatens Iraq’s sovereignty and stability amid intensifying regional conflict.

In a statement, the Alliance - a political coalition representing Christian parties in Iraq - expressed “strong condemnation of any aggression that endangers security forces, threatens civilian safety, harms innocent lives, or violates the sovereignty of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.”

The remarks come as Iran and allied Iraqi armed groups have stepped up drone and missile attacks on the US Consulate in Erbil, the Kurdish capital city’s international airport, and several other locations across the province.

In the Region’s eastern Sulaimani province, the latest attack, recorded in the early hours of Wednesday, targeted a hill in Sulaimani city center known as UN hill, which is reportedly used to houses several offices of United Nations’ entities.

The attacks have also targeted Peshmerga forces, which the Alliance described as “a constitutionally recognized component of Iraq’s national defense system.”

“The targeting of civilian areas under any pretext constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law and represents a grave breach of moral and human values,” the Christian bloc’s statement read.

It added that attacks against the Peshmerga “amount to an assault on the national security framework and threaten the stability achieved through tremendous sacrifices.”

The Alliance urged Baghdad to fulfill its constitutional obligations, stressing “the importance of the Federal Government of Iraq fully carrying out its responsibility to protect all citizens without discrimination” and to ensure “that no part of Iraq is subjected to aggression or violation.”

Since Saturday and through Tuesday, Iran has launched a massive, multi‑front offensive involving hundreds of drones and ballistic and cruise missiles, targeting what it says are US assets in the region after American and Israeli strikes on Iran over the weekend killed Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials.

Warning against Iraq becoming a battleground for a wider regional confrontation, the Christian Alliance said, “Iraq, with all its ethnic and religious components, must not become an arena for settling regional or international scores.”

“Let our enduring choice be peace founded on justice, sovereignty grounded in mutual respect, and unity built upon genuine partnership… Nations are not built by missiles, nor safeguarded by escalation,” the bloc concluded.
