Ancient relic found in Iraq’s Dhi Qar province
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - In a village in the southern Iraqi province of Dhi Qar, a girl in her twenties found an ancient vase near her home that is over 5,000 years old and then handed it over here to the Nasiriyah Museum.
The young girl found the vase near her house after a wave of torrential rain in the city.
“This Sumerian piece is more than 5,000 years old, dating back to the era we call the Dawn of the Sumerian dynasties era, before 3,000 BC,” Sajad Abdulhussain Manjil, director of the Nasiriyah Civilization Museum, told Rudaw’s Anmar Ghazi, adding that citizens have handed in hundreds of artifacts they have found over the past year.
In 2022, the museum received more than 300 artifacts, all of which were handed in by locals. All the pieces had been handed over to the Museum of Iraq in Baghdad.
Manjil mentioned that their museum received 70 artifacts from one citizen alone in one batch earlier this year.
Dhi Qar province includes more than 1,200 archaeological sites, distributed in separate areas in the governorate, in addition to the presence of hundreds of artifacts in the city museum, which was built in the sixties of the last century.
