Iraqi forces seize ‘biggest ISIS base’ in Diyala
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi security forces have been able to control an Islamic State base believed to be the jihadists' biggest in Diyala province, Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced in a statement.
“Army forces backed by federal police and fighters belonging to the Hashd al-Shaabi control the Daesh group’s biggest military base in Diyala province,” said the statement, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS, on Tuesday.
The Iraqi army began a military campaign in Diyala province on April 30, according to the statement, which added that a number of ISIS fighters were killed while security forces had neutralized much of the group’s weapons and military equipment.
At least 60 planted mines were defused by the Iraqi forces since the campaign began, the statement said.
