Truck bomb attack on Iraqi city kills at least 47
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A truck bomb was detonated in Hillah, 60 miles south of Baghdad, on Sunday in a suicide attack which has killed at least 47 and wounded another 65 who were gathered at a security checkpoint.
A police officer cited by the AP said that 39 of the victims were civilians while the rest of the casualties were civilians.
A medical official, who asked to remain anonymous since they weren't authorized to disclose this information, also corroborated the police officers figures.
The checkpoint outside of Hillah is usually clogged by traffic jams which explains the high casualty count. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Islamic State (ISIS) has not held any territory south of Baghdad since late 2014 but have frequently charged either civilians or military targets with high-speed trucks, often armored, laden with explosives and blown them up, often with devastating circumstances like this latest attack.
