Iraqi forces progress towards Tigris River
MOSUL, Iraq - Clashes between the Iraqi army and ISIS militants are ongoing Saturday in the neighborhoods of Tamim and Muthana in eastern Mosul with the advancing Iraqi troops trying to clear these areas in order to reach Faisaliya and Jazeer and progress towards the Tigris River.
Rudaw’s Farhad Dolamari in Mosul reported that the advancing Iraqi Golden Force has almost reached the edges of Muthana in northeastern Mosul. Once they control the neighbourhood, they will be two kilometres from the river.
ISIS militants are putting up moderate resistance, shelling places they have lost to the army with mortars in Muthana and Tamim. They have also deployed at least two car bombs on Saturday.
Residents of these two neighborhoods have fled the area, seeking safety in regions already under Iraqi army control.
Almost eight weeks after the launch of the Mosul offensive by a combination of Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitaries, Col. John Dorrian, the spokesperson for the coalition, told Rudaw earlier that there are clear indications on the ground that ISIS is losing men and resources.
Fazil Barwari, commander of the Iraqi Golden Force, told Rudaw over the weekend that their forces expect to reach the Tigris River within a few days.
“We will get to the Tigris River in the near future. We are 3.5 kilometers away from the Old Mosul Bridge,” said Barwari.
As of Friday, Iraqi forces had liberated 27 neighbourhoods in Mosul.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has repeatedly said that his forces will recapture Mosul before the end of 2016.
