Sudani, KDP bloc reject using Iraq as launchpad for attacks

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc on Tuesday stressed their rejection of targeting Iraqi cities and warned that Iraqi territory must not be used as a launchpad for attacks against other countries, according to a statement from Sudani’s office.

“The meeting discussed the general situation in the country and developments in the region, affirming the rejection of targeting any Iraqi cities and stressing that Iraqi territory must not be used as a launching point for attacks against any country,” the statement read.

The KDP delegation was headed by the Second Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi parliament, Farhad Atrushi.

They also reviewed the internal political situation in Iraq, highlighting the need to continue efforts to fulfill constitutional obligations. The meeting further stressed the importance of cooperation between the executive and legislative branches to advance development efforts and serve all Iraqi citizens, the statement added.

The meeting comes as the US and Israel’s war with Iran continues to intensify. The conflict has spilled over into other countries in the region, particularly Washington’s allies, significantly affecting global trade and oil prices.

The Kurdistan Region has accused Baghdad of failing to stop drone and missile attacks from Iraq-based Iran-aligned militia groups. Dozens of assaults by these groups on the US consulate in Erbil and other military and civilian sites have caused casualties.
