ISIS claims to shoot down Iraqi warplane

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Islamic State followers and a local source said Wednesday the extremist fighters had shot down an Iraqi military plane north of the city of Ramadi.

According to social media posts associated with the extremists, the Iraqi fighter jet was shot down while conducting strikes against the ISIS positions near the captured city.

A member of the Sunni tribal forces in the province told news agencies the downed plane was one of the Russian-made Sukhoi aircraft Iraq purchased from Moscow last year to use in the fight against ISIS.

Ramadi, the capital of Sunni-dominated Anbar province, was captured from Iraqi forces in May.

The Iraqi military, supported by the US-led coalition and Iranian-backed Shiite militias, has been battling the jihadist group since last year.
