Iraqi MP rejects report on Mosul’s fall as ‘immature and vengeful’

BAGHDAD—An Iraqi MP from the Shiite State of Law coalition described on Tuesday a parliamentary report on the fall of Mosul as ‘immature’, calling members of the investigative committee ‘vengeful’.

“This report has a spirit of vengeance and accuses others,” MP Salih Mutlib told Rudaw. “It is a dangerous report and not one that was expected.”

A report by an Iraqi parliamentary committee on Monday blamed former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and a number of senior officials for the fall Mosul to the Islamic State (ISIS) in the summer of 2014.

MP Mutlib, from Maliki’s own State of Law coalition, dismissed the report as imaginary and lacking evidence.

“This report relies on personal testimonies,” he said. “It is not investigative and does not rely on evidence.”

The parliamentary report that was approved by the government is to be submitted to the judicial authorities for possible legal action.

For his part, the former prime minister, Maliki, left the country for Iran a day before the report was released.

Upon his arrival in the Iranian capital Tehran, Maliki accused Saudi Arabia and Israel of “playing a negative role in the region.”

Maliki also lost his position as Vice President earlier this month when PM Haider Abadi launched a series of reforms, eliminating many high-ranking government posts.
