Official: Islamic State levels defiant tribal village

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Islamic State extremists destroyed an entire village in Salahadin province after residents refused to fight for  the radical group, a local tribal council said Monday.

“Daesh gunmen have demolished 400 civilian houses in Zawiya village as a punishment for the residents who refused to be a part of Daesh militias,” said Marwan Jabara, spokesman for the Committee of Tribal Communities.

Jabara said the Islamic State, or ISIS, tried to force the men of the village to join their militia but the villagers refused. In response, ISIS forced the residents out of Zawiya,  north of Baiji, and leveled the entire community.

Jabara has called on the government to push ISIS of their territory and help the civilians who have lost their homes and are now displaced to nearby areas.
