Abadi orders investigation into reported Mosul abuses by Iraqi forces
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has ordered the formation of a committee to investigate reports of abduction and abuse committed by Iraqi forces in Nineveh during the military offensive to oust ISIS from the province and the city of Mosul.
“The Prime Minister stressed the importance of human rights,” reads a statement issued by his office on Monday that called on commanders in the field to ensure no violations were committed during the operations.
His announcement comes after a video was shared on social media over the weekend that appears to show uniformed Iraqi security force personnel beating at least three ISIS suspects before killing them.
The UN’s mission in Iraq, UNAMI, issued a statement on Saturday calling on Baghdad to investigate the video “which purportedly shows the brutal mistreatment and murder of at least three captured ISIL members in a retaken area between Intisar and Karma neighbourhoods of east Mosul at the hands of what appears to be Iraqi Security Forces Personnel.”
Last week, Rudaw reported on Shiite Iraqi soldiers in Mosul boasting about revenge killing an ISIS militant who had surrendered.
Abadi’s statement said that those who recorded abuses and shared the videos on social media wanted to “spoil the joy of victory and to defame the real image of the brave security forces and their sacrifices to liberate the land and maintain security.”
