Joint Baghdad-Erbil delegation to visit Tehran over attacks on Kurdistan Region: Official
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji said on Sunday that a delegation from the country’s security committee is set to visit Iran to "thoroughly investigate” drone and missile attacks on the Kurdistan Region.
“Soon a delegation from the High Security Committee will go to Tehran to thoroughly investigate the matter,” Araji told Rudaw, adding that a delegation from the committee, which coordinates security matters between federal and regional authorities, will “soon travel to Tehran.”
The top security official explained that he, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Interior Rebar Ahmad, and "constituent parties of the committee” will be in the delegation.
According to Rudaw’s tracking, the Kurdistan Region was hit with 855 drone and missile attacks from the onset of the US-Israeli war against Iran on February 28 until Thursday. The strikes resulted in 20 fatalities and 128 injuries. Tehran and its aligned “Axis of Resistance" in Iraq are behind the attacks, targeting US bases as well as Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.
The attacks resume, with the last one on Saturday sustaining one injury from the Komala Toilers of Kurdistan.
Araji gave the remarks after meeting with the KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who arrived in Baghdad on Saturday for a series of high-level meetings with the Iraqi government officials and political leaders.
The continuation of the attacks on the Kurdistan Region is one of the topics Barzani has raised in Baghdad.
“The Iraqi Prime Minister is aware of this matter,” Araji said in reference to the attacks.
Erbil has repeatedly condemned the strikes and called on Baghdad to hold the perpetrators in Iraq accountable while urging it to tackle the issue with Tehran.
The US and Israel launched a massive aerial campaign against Iran in late February, targeting around 17,000 sites across the country throughout a conflict that lasted nearly six weeks.
Iran responded by striking Israel as well as US bases across the region, including the Kurdistan Region.
