Sources: Bomb attack strikes tribal gathering in Diyala

BAQUBA, Diyala Province – A bomb attack hit a large gathering of tribal leaders on Wednesday in the city of Baquba, capital of Diyala province, local sources have told Rudaw.

“There are casualties, but the exact number is unknown,” a witness said.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The eastern province of Diyala has a majority Sunni population but is also home to Shiites, Kurds and other ethnic and religious groups.

Most of Diyala is under the control of the Iraqi government, but Islamic State forces have in the past attacked civilians and government officials.

In early May, Iraqi security forces managed to capture an ISIS base believed to be the jihadists' biggest in Diyala province, according to an Iraqi Ministry of Defense statement released at the time.
