UPDATED: Bombings in Baghdad area kill two, injure 11
BAGHDAD, Iraq—Two bomb attacks, in north and western Baghdad, have killed two, including a soldier, and injured another 11, two days after the Baghdad Operations Command warned the public they have received confirmed intelligence of imminent multiple attacks in the capital by the Islamic State (ISIS).
A source from the Iraqi interior ministry said an explosive device killed one Iraqi soldier and injured another four north of the capital.
The source, who asked not to be named, said the bomb targeted an army convoy in al-Mushahada town, Tarmiyah district, 60 kilometres north of Baghdad.
In Amrieh, in western Baghdad, a bombing killed one and injured another 7. The explosion is believed to have been an improvised device targeting a grocery market.
On Sunday, eight people were killed, including two Iraqi soldiers, and 28 were injured in a suicide bomb attack targeting a checkpoint in western Baghdad close to a vocational high school in Iskan neighbourhood, Brigadier General Saad Maan told local media.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack. It said it targeted the Hashd al-Shaabi militia.
Also on Sunday, Al-Iraq News reported that security authorities in Baghdad had blocked a number of main roads, in particular in areas where there are commercial and entertainment buildings, to prevent attacks by the Islamic State.
It cited a security source who said the measures come “after they have received confirmed intelligence that the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization intends to conduct suicide attacks through the use of vehicle-born bombs on a number of neighbourhoods in the capital.”
