ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Monday announced that the government has hanged three people convicted for the 2016 explosion in the capital city of Baghdad which killed hundreds of people.

A car exploded in Baghdad’s bustling Karrada shopping area on July 3, 2016 while people were preparing for Eid al-Fitr. The blast and the raging fire it sparked killed at least 320 people.

Meeting with the families of the victims at his office on Monday, Sudani announced that three people have been executed over the incident.

“During the meeting, His Excellency conveyed to the families that last night and this morning, the rightful punishment of death sentence was carried out against three key criminals found guilty of their involvement in the terrorist bombing,” read a statement from Sudani’s office.

The Islamic State (ISIS) had claimed the bombing.

ISIS controlled swathes of Syrian and Iraqi land in 2014 but the group was territorially defeated in both countries by 2019. When the deadly blast took place, the Iraqi troops were fighting the group in several places.

Sudani’s office did not say when the convicts were sentenced.
