ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Islamic State group, or ISIS, has executed 26 prisoners over the last week in the captured city of Fallujah, in the Anbar province, said an Iraqi security source.

“ISIS militants have executed 20 prisoners in the town of Fallujah and its outskirts on charges of cooperation with security forces and spying on the group,” said the security source.

He said those people executed were from the sub-districts of Nassaf, Garma and Saqlawi who had been arrested last year and imprisoned in Fallujah prison.

According to the security source, ISIS has executed some 500 prisoners in the city since last year.

Fallujah has been under ISIS control since it was overrun by ISIS in January 2014. According to Rudaw reports from the front, there has been little progress in efforts to retake it.

Fallujah is located roughly 69km west of Baghdad on the Euphrates River.
