A once major hospital in Mosul destroyed beyond recognition

Ayad Ibrahim, a staff worker at Salam Hospital in Mosul has returned to a destroyed building. The place that no longer looks like a hospital, he said, due to the heavy fighting between ISIS militants and government troops in eastern Mosul.

"The hospital has been destroyed so badly, it cannot be reversed. Most of the hospital building is destroyed. This is what ISIS left behind," Ibrahim told Rudaw.

This was ISIS' number one hospital and once a major health center for people on the east side of Mosul. Now with the place gone, 14 medical centers have opened here in order to provide medical care for people.

However, due to the large number of patients and lack of needed medicine, their job has been difficult.

Mohammed Hassan, a patient, said: "We were surrounded for a month and we waited for the Iraqi army to come rescue us. The army came and rescued us. We came to this hospital thinking we'll get the medicine that we need. But they have nothing. They don't have x-rays!"
