Turkey opens new front north of al-Bab

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Turkey opened a new front in its Euphrates Shield operation in northern Syria as a convoy of military vehicles crossed the border at a point 60 kilometres west of Jarablus, north of al-Bab, on Saturday.

A convoy of Turkish tanks and armoured vehicles crossed the border at al-Rai, Turkey’s Dogan News Agency reported.

Free Syrian Army (FSA) forces have taken control of some villages and are fighting for control of the town of al-Rai.

Hurriyet Daily News reported that officials on the Turkish side of the border have ordered journalists not to shoot video, “for security concerns.”

Earlier on Saturday, three rockets fired from Islamic State-controlled territory in this area landed in the centre of the Turkish city of Kilis. There were no reports of casualties but 21 people have died from ISIS rocket fire on Kilis since January, Dogan News Agency reported.
