Projectiles target military airport in Syrian capital, no casualties: State media

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Three unidentified projectiles targeted a military airport in a governmental and diplomatic hub in Damascus on Tuesday, Syrian state media reported, adding that no casualties were recorded.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that “three unidentified projectiles” targeted the al-Mazzeh Military Airport, located in the southwestern part of Damascus, “without causing any casualties or material damage.”

SANA further cited “a military source” as stating that “the competent authorities deployed around Mazzeh Military Airport and began investigations to determine the source of the projectiles.”

Rudaw's Damascus reporter, Viviyan Fetah, reporting from the scene stated, "It has been confirmed that there are absolutely no casualties - no one has been killed or injured - because this is an old [abandoned] military airport."

"Previously, during the former government’s era [Bashar al-Assad regime], no one dared to stand here or pass by. But now, in a way, it is empty and not in use," she added.

The Mazzeh neighborhood is known for housing key government offices and diplomatic missions.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Tuesday that activists heard "the sound of explosions" near the military airport, followed by police and ambulance sirens along the Mazzeh highway.

Since the ouster of longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad a year ago, the Mazzeh neighborhood has remained a flashpoint.

On the day opposition forces seized Damascus, December 8, 2024, the area was hit by what were widely reported as Israeli airstrikes targeting former regime military infrastructure.

In mid-November, the Mazzeh neighborhood was struck by what Syrian state media described as Katyusha rockets, causing injuries and property damage. SANA reported that the rockets were fired from a mobile launcher by "unknown assailants."

The agency further cited Syrian defense authorities condemning the incident as a "treacherous attack," vowing to pursue those responsible and "take firm measures against anyone who tampers with the security of the capital or targets the lives and stability of Syrians."
