One Turkish soldier dead and four injured in northern Syria rocket attack
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A Turkish soldier was killed and four others injured in a rocket attack in northern Syria, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced on Monday.
"In the Operation Spring Shield zone (Idlib), one of our hero fellow soldiers was martyred and four of our heroic fellow soldiers were injured in the rocket attack on our supply convoy on May 10, 2021,” the ministry said on Twitter.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) on Monday reported that an IED exploded on a convoy of seven Turkish military vehicles on the Syria-Turkey border in northern Idlib.
“Ambulances were seen rushing to the site of the explosion where they checked the site and evacuated several Turkish soldiers who sustained various injuries, amid unconfirmed reports of fatalities,” the UK-based watchdog reported.
Idlib is one of the rebel’s last bastions in the country. In February 2020, Turkey launched Operation Spring Shield in response to attacks on Turkish army convoys in Idlib. A ceasefire was reached between Turkey and Russia in Moscow in March 2020. However, the ceasefire has not prevented occasional clashes.
At least 50 pro-Turkey rebel fighters were killed and tens injured in an airstrike in Idlib in October, considered to have been the deadliest attack of the year on the jihadists.
