ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Fighting continues between the Islamic State and Syrian regime forces in the Syrian Kurdish city of Hasakah.
According to a Hasakah official in comments to Rudaw, a fierce fight is ongoing between ISIS elements and the Syrian Army in the south of Hasakah.
“The fight started in the Al-Nashwa and Al-Gweran districts in Hasaka. ISIS fighters have launched different attacks as a tactic to demoralize the Syrian army, the source said. “During the intense fight the Syrian army used heavy weapons and warplanes.”
The source added a Syrian officer and four soldiers were killed in the south of Hasaka near a bus stop, but the Syrian army took control of the area in Rasafa and the University of Economics.
Since last August, fighting in Hasakah has resulted in the deaths of 470 Syrian soldiers, including senior officers.
Hasaka was previously controlled by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Syrian Army, with each controlling different parts of the city.
