Syria peace talks continue in Geneva

The Geneva talks aimed at ending the war in Syria continued on Wednesday with the arrival of the opposition delegation.

This is the third round of "proximity" talks aimed at ending the war. The ultimate aim of these talks is to form a transitional government in Damascus which will be able to bring the Syrian war to an end.

The umbrella High Negotiations Committee (HNC) represents recognized opposition groups and are negotiating on their half. President Bashar al-Assad's delegation are set to arrive in Geneva later this week.

The talks continue amid concerns that the US-Russian brokered ceasefire in Syria, which has largely held since February 27, is collapsing given the increased clashes in the key city of Aleppo. If the ceasefire fails that could in turn seriously damage the potential of the Geneva peace talks to succeed.
