Russia wants Syria ceasefire document released to public
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused US-backed Syrian opposition groups of violating the recent US-Russian brokered ceasefire and asked for the content of that ceasefire document to be released.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a Rudaw correspondent in Moscow that, “Russia wants the content of the ceasefire agreement to be released to the public, but the US does not want us to.”
“The package includes all the mechanisms for solving issues in Syria,” she added.
Russian experts and observers believe that both Moscow and Washington are in agreement on the future of Syria, namely that its future should be one of a federal state with a constitution.
A Russian observer told Rudaw that both powers agree on giving local authority to different groups in different regions. Then, the observer claimed, the US and Russia will oversee the drafting of a constitution “for the future of Syria, as a federal country with Kobani, Jazira and Afrin Cantons under the control of the Syrian Kurds inside a federal Syrian state.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Russian press on Friday that the US must separate recognized opposition groups in Syria from terrorist organizations.
The Americans must “separate the opposition groups that cooperate with them from Jabhat al-Nusra [Al-Nusra Front] and the likes of them,” Lavrov said in an interview with Sputnik radio in Kyrgyzstan, according to Russia’s state-run Russia Today news agency.
Russia also accused US-backed rebel groups on Thursday of violating the latest ceasefire.
“On the third day of the ceasefire only the Syrian Army is the only one observing it. Meanwhile, the US-led ‘moderate rebels’ are intensifying the shelling of residential areas,” said Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Igor Konashenkov, on Thursday.
