ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Saturday said they captured suspected members of an Islamic State (ISIS) cell in eastern Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province after an earlier raid resulted in the arrest of 10 suspects.
“Based on precise intelligence, our forces raided where the members of the terrorist cell were hiding in the Al-Busayrah town, and successfully captured them,” read a statement from the SDF.
The operation was carried out with the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).
“The captured terrorists were planning to carry out terrorist attacks targeting our military and security forces, as well as civilians and public institutions in the area,” the statement added.
ISIS, which was territorially defeated in 2019, has recently sought to regain ground, taking advantage of instability in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The SDF is fighting to prevent the jihadists from reestablishing a foothold. On Friday, the force announced they captured 10 ISIS suspects in Deir ez-Zor after one of their own was killed and three others were injured in an ISIS attack.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented 84 operations carried out by ISIS cells in northeast Syria (Rojava) since the beginning of 2025. These include armed attacks, targeted killings, and bombings.
