Syria air defence systems intercept missiles fired at Latakia: state media
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Syrian air defense systems intercepted missiles fired from the sea at the northwestern city of Latakia on Monday night, according to state media, citing military sources.
There are currently no details of casualties.
It comes just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to establish a buffer zone around the border of Syria’s last rebel holdout Idlib.
On Saturday, state media reported an Israeli missile attack near Damascus airport. The missiles reportedly struck a weapons depot.
Israel has frequently targeted Syrian military facilities and positions alleging the presence of Iranian personnel and weaponry.
Iran has intervened in the Syrian civil war in support of President Bashar al-Assad.
Israel has said it will not tolerate Iran's presence in bordering Syria and has demanded its complete withdrawal.
“Our air defences are countering hostile missiles coming from the sea towards the city of Latakia, and a number of them have been intercepted,” the source told SANA.
