ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Four people were killed and two others were wounded in Syria’s southwestern province of Rif Dimashq late Saturday in what state media described as a “robbery operation” at a currency exchange office.

The incident took place in Deir Atiyah town in Rif Dimashq province. Six casualties came under the gunfire after three unidentified gunmen attacked a currency exchange office and a car rental office, reported Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), citing an unnamed security official.

“The source indicated that the internal security forces deployed immediately at the crime scene and are working to pursue the criminals to arrest them and bring them to justice,” added SANA.

The attack comes as the transitional government’s security forces struggle to maintain order across the country, nearly a year after the fall of long-time dictator Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

One of the major deadly attacks since the fall of Assad’s regime was a suicide bombing attack at the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in the capital, Damascus, in June. At least 22 were killed and tens injured.

The Syrian interior ministry blamed the Islamic State (ISIS) for the attack, but a lesser-known Sunni extremist group claimed responsibility.
