ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) came under an attack by an unidentified armed group on Saturday in a village east of Deir ez-Zor province, the Kurdish-led force announced.

"Unknown armed elements operating from positions on the western bank of the Euphrates River fired an RPG round this evening at one of our positions in the village of Abu Hammam, east of Deir ez-Zor," the SDF said in a statement.

No casualties are reported, it added.

The SDF said their forces "responded appropriately, accurately targeting the source of the fire."

"Our forces remain on high alert to protect local residents and ensure stability in the region."

The Syrian eastern province of Dier ez-Zor has in recent days seen an increase in armed attacks on the Kurdish-led force, part of which are blamed on the Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

On Saturday, the SDF said one of their fighters was killed when repelling an attack by a group of ISIS militants.

Although ISIS was declared territorially defeated in Syria in 2019, it has sought to regain ground by taking advantage of the instability that followed the fall of longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December.

The SDF and other security forces in northeast Syria (Rojava) remain actively engaged in counterterrorism operations to prevent the group’s reemergence.

The Kurdish-led Internal Security Forces (Asayish) announced earlier this week it captured two ISIS operatives in Deir ez-Zor, in an operation supported by the US-led global coalition.
