Washington sends mixed messages about YPG fighters

WASHINGTON - US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said on Thursday that the most effective ground force in Syria which Washington backs is tied to a "terrorist" group.

"Yes," said Carter in response to a question put forward by a Senator at a Congressional hearing over whether the Syrian Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) had "links" to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a group designated as a terrorist organization by Washington.

On the same day Rudaw asked the spokesman for the US Department of State, John Kirby, about that institutions stance on the YPG.

"The YPG is not designated as a foreign terrorist organization, the PKK is," he said.
