Russia claims Syria is preparing to recapture Raqqa and Deir Ezzor from ISIS

The Russian Ambassador to the United Nations claimed that the Syrian Army is readying to launch offensive operations against Islamic State (ISIS) in both Raqqa and Deir Ezzor.

"This is what the Syrian Army is doing with support from the Russian Air Force. As a result of these actions, Palmyra has been recaptured and now they are planning to launch an operation towards Deir Ezzor and Raqqa. Fighting is taking place against groups like Al-Nusra Front in Aleppo and a few others places," Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin told Russia's RIA news agency on Friday.

The claim comes a mere day after the Syrian Army appeared to begin mobilizing for a large-scale offensive into Aleppo against Nusra and other groups, an offensive which the Russians are also likely to lend air support to.

Syrian ground forces successfully forced ISIS from the ancient city of Palmyra with Russian air support last March 27th.
