Buses attacked in eastern Syria, at least 10 killed: sources
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A number of buses were attacked on Friday in the Syrian eastern province of Deir ezZor. As a result, at least 10 people were killed, according to state media and a war monitor.
Syrian state-owned SANA news agency reported that three buses carrying workers came under an aerial attack in the al-Taym oil field in Deir ezZor, adding that 10 workers were killed and two others were injured.
SANA cited the oil minister as blaming the US-led global coalition against the Islamic State for the “blatant” assault.
The Coalition has not commented on the incident.
Deir ezZor is oil-rich and partially dominated by the Syrian regime. The rest of the province is controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The Kurdish forces often carry out military operations against ISIS in the province.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that the attack was carried out by ISIS.
The UK-based war monitor added that 12 workers were killed and a number of others were injured in the attack, reporting military reinforcements by the regime forces.
The attack was carried out with the detonation of an IED as well as usage of light and medium weapons, according to the SOHR.
ISIS controlled swathes of Syrian territory in 2014 but it was territorially defeated by the SDF and the coalition forces in 2019.
