Turkish soldier killed near ISIS-held al-Bab in Syria

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A Turkish soldier was killed and six others wounded in a car bomb attack near the ISIS-held city of al-Bab in northwestern Syria on Wednesday, the Turkish military announced.

According to Hurriyet news the military also announced that Turkish warplanes have continued to target ISIS in the al-Bab area. They claim to have destroyed 12 targets, killing 23 militants.

Turkey also carried out airstrikes against ISIS in the area as part of its Operation Euphrates Shield campaign overnight on Tuesday. Ankara has vowed to capture the city from ISIS using its Free Syrian Army (FSA) allies, who are positioned outside the city.

On Tuesday the military reported that they destroyed four ISIS shelters, three headquarters and a tank in less than an hour of strikes.

Turkey intervened against ISIS and the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in northwestern Syria on August 24. Since then they have lost at least 20 soldiers in clashes and approximately 300 of the Syrian rebels they are backing.
