Thousands celebrate Amedspor’s historic promotion to Turkish Super League
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Tens of thousands of fans gathered in Diyarbakir (Amed) on Sunday as Amedspor celebrated its historic promotion to Turkey’s Super League with a trophy-lifting ceremony at Newroz Park, marking the first time the Kurdish club has reached the country’s top football division.
Supporters of all ages filled the celebration grounds dressed in the club’s green, red and yellow colors, waving flags and chanting slogans as festivities continued late into the evening.
Amedspor secured promotion to the Turkish Super League earlier this month after drawing 3-3 with Igdirspor in the final round of the TFF First League, finishing second with 74 points and earning automatic promotion for the first time in the club’s history.
The Diyarbakir-based club enjoys widespread support among Kurds in Turkey and abroad and has long been viewed by many supporters as a symbol of Kurdish identity. The team has frequently faced controversies and nationalist hostility in recent years, particularly after adopting the Kurdish name “Amed,” the Kurdish term for Diyarbakir.
Celebrations erupted across Kurdish-majority cities in Turkey and beyond after the club’s promotion was confirmed last week. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and several Kurdish political figures congratulated the club on the achievement.
