Six killed, dozens injured in Istanbul explosion
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least six people were killed and dozens others were injured as a result of an explosion that occurred in Turkey’s Istanbul on Sunday, with the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemning the attack and vowing that the perpetrators shall be “punished”.
The explosion occurred on Istanbul’s crowded Istiklal Street on Sunday afternoon, killing at least six and injuring 53 others. An investigation into the incident has been launched by the Istanbul chief public prosecutor's office, as the origin of the explosion is yet to be identified.
“Our nation should be sure that the perpetrators of the incident on Istiklal Street will be punished as they deserve,” Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu Agency cited Erdogan as saying, stressing that the relevant authorities will continue their efforts to uncover the perpetrators.
The Turkish president said “it might be wrong” to attribute the explosion to “terrorism”, but claimed that, based on the initial information provided by the governor “there is a smell of terror here.”
Istiklal is one of Istanbul’s most famous streets and is often described as a must-see attraction for tourists visiting the country. The 1.4-kilometer-long pedestrian street is located in Taksim Square of the Beyoglu district.
